Mumtalakat Holding Company, Bahrain’s sovereign wealth fund, has teamed up with ARP Group to create an AI‑native, blockchain‑enabled wholesale bank based in Bahrain, according to Middle East AI News. The Central Bank of Bahrain has granted in‑principle approval, but the venture cannot start regulated activities until it receives final authorisation.

The proposed bank will serve regulated financial institutions, payment firms and businesses that operate across borders, offering programmable services via APIs. Human oversight, governance and risk controls will sit alongside the AI‑driven systems. Products will be rolled out in phases, shaped by client discussions, though no launch date or investment amount was disclosed.

Why it matters to your business

For operators in the Gulf, an AI‑native bank could lower the cost and complexity of cross‑border transactions, speeding up settlements and reducing manual processing. This may create cheaper financing options for regional exporters and fintechs that need to move money across multiple currencies.

The partnership combines Mumtalakat’s long‑term capital with ARP’s expertise in institutional finance and digital infrastructure, signalling a push towards AI‑driven financial services in the Gulf. Competitors may feel pressure to adopt similar technology or risk falling behind.

What to do on Monday

  1. Review your current banking and payments providers for AI‑enabled API services that could reduce processing costs.
  2. Engage with the new bank’s team early to shape the phased product roadmap to match your cross‑border needs.
  3. Assess internal governance to ensure you can integrate AI‑driven services while maintaining risk controls.
