Absa cuts debt review turnaround from four days to one with AI
AI-driven document processing speeds up Absa's debt review, boosts efficiency and customer experience.

According to ITWeb, Absa has shortened the processing time for debt review applications from four days to one day by using AI, specifically optical character recognition to pull data from documents.
The bank says the technology also underpins pilots for customer onboarding, where AI reads identity documents, passports, utility bills and external bank statements to cut manual work.
Absa’s CIO of data and applied AI, Robert Benvenuti, said the AI rollout is part of a broader push that includes AI‑enabled fraud detection, a curated AI gateway with 120 large language models and an AI Academy that has trained over 10,000 staff.
Why it matters to your business
Faster debt review means customers in financial distress face less delay, improving satisfaction and reducing operational costs for the bank.
The AI tools free employees from repetitive document handling, allowing them to focus on judgement‑heavy tasks, which can raise the overall productivity of the workforce.
